António Lobo Antunes recebe hoje, em Guadalajara, o Prémio Literatura em Línguas Romances 2008, na XXII Feira Internacional do Livro.

Fotobiografia de Fernando Pessoa

Vai ser editada pelo Círculo de Leitores uma nova fotobiografia de Fernando Pessoa.

Inserida na colecção que o Circulo de Leitores tem vindo a editar com fotobiografias de portugueses que se destacaram no século XX, "Fernando Pessoa" (1888-1935) apresenta 200 páginas preenchidas com fotografias e um texto do investigador pessoano Richard Zenith.

O objectivo principal da obra "foi fazer um trabalho de síntese bastante equilibrado", explicou à Agência Lusa Joaquim Vieira, ex-jornalista e autor e director de várias publicações, nomeadamente, na colecção de fotobiografias, de Salazar, Marcello Caetano e Almada Negreiros.

Projecto germinado há três anos, a fotobiografia "Fernando Pessoa" é agora lançada no mercado editorial, coincidindo com as celebrações dos 120 anos do nascimento do poeta.

"Quisemos dar uma perspectiva mais desenvolvida do que aquilo que tinha sido feito até agora por outros projectos editoriais", nomeadamente a primeira fotobiografia de Fernando Pessoa, criada nos anos 80 por Maria José de Lancastre, e que "veio a dar origem a este género de obras", destacou.

These were the days when, if I read a book from my father's library and liked it, I would take it into my room and place it among my own books. My father, who was pleased to see his son reading, was also glad to see some of his books migrating to my library, and whenever he saw one of his old books on my bookshelf, he would tease me by saying, "Aha, I see this volume has been promoted to the upper echelons!"

Roberto Bolaño

Well beyond his sometimes nomadic life, Roberto Bolaño was an exemplary literary rebel. To drag fiction toward the unknown he had to go there himself, and then invent a method with which to represent it. Since the unknown place was reality, the results of his work are multi-dimensional, in a way that runs ahead of a critic's one-at-a-time powers of description. Highlight Bolaño's conceptual play and you risk missing the sex and viscera in his work. Stress his ambition and his many references and you conjure up threats of exclusive high-modernist obscurity, or literature as a sterile game, when the truth is it's hard to think of a writer who is less of a snob, or—in the double sense of exposing us to unsavory things and carrying seeds for the future—less sterile.

The contours of his life are becoming well known. Bolaño died of liver failure in 2003 in Spain, where he had long resided. He was born in southern Chile in 1953—a wrenchingly different place and era. His father had been a champion amateur boxer and his mother was a teacher who encouraged her dyslexic son's love of poetry. In 1968, the family moved to Mexico City, where Bolaño began to acquire a cosmopolitan self-education through the happily random method of shoplifting books. (As an adult his taste was wide enough to appreciate Paracelsus, Max Beerbohm, and Philip K. Dick.)

This latest rediscovery from the author of Embers shows the Hungarian master as a sinister spellbinder, conjuring an eve-of-apocalypse mood that fuses lyrical intensity – well caught by translator George Szirtes – with jolting glimpses of depravity. The doom, of course, belongs to the society beyond a town "accustomed to war" – but Márai's wider vision never detracts from the shock and suspense of his grim finale.

Prémio Cervantes 2008

Juan Marsé em entrevista.

Marsé, uno de los más populares escritores catalanes que escriben en castellano, ha comentado que no se siente bandera de una lengua ni piensa hacerlo: "Cada uno escribe en la lengua que quiere, y en todo caso defiendo mi derecho a escribir en la lengua que me dé la gana, porque la lengua es un vehículo, una manera de entender y yo no soy en absoluto nacionalista".

"Cuando me hablan de banderas, meto la mano en el bolsillo porque creo que me van a robar la cartera", ha ironizado. El autor de 'Últimas tardes con Teresa' está escribiendo ya una nueva novela, aunque no ha querido desvelar mucho de su contenido, por temor a "estropear el argumento al contarlo".

De esta nueva obra apenas ha revelado que "tiene que ver con las novelas que a mí gustan, como 'Rabos de lagartija', que transcurre una parte en los años 40 y otra en la actualidad". Ha confesado: "Siempre me cuesta escribir un nueva novela, porque soy muy quisquilloso, pero me gusta hacerlo porque disfruto escribiendo".

Preguntado por cuál de sus "hijas" literarias es su preferida, el autor barcelonés ha dado rápidamente los nombres de 'Si te dicen que caí' y 'Rabos de lagartija', pero su "debilidad" es su primera novela, 'Encerrados con un solo juguete' (1961), finalista del premio Biblioteca Breve, porque la escribió en un momento importante de su vida, cuando vivía en París.

Amis laments the destruction wrought on the English pub. His apprenticeship as a drinks-man began with quiet conversations among smoke-blackened trophies, with drink as but one component in a profoundly English routine of social consolation. This consolation was arbitrarily destroyed during the Seventies by one-armed bandits, kitsch signs and the conversation-stopping noise of pop music. Kingsley blames the brewery chains for this violence against the very heart of English society. To the violence of the brewers, however, has been added that of the politicians, who have banned the activity - smoking - that brought people from their homes of an evening, and which both conserved and overcame their shyness.

Un demi-siècle après sa mort, et peut-être en partie en raison d'un destin qui, rétrospectivement, a éclairé de sa lumière sombre l'ensemble de l'œuvre, Cesare Pavese est un auteur mythique, baigné d'une aura de romantisme tragique, une sorte de Fitzgerald italien qui, à la lente dégradation par l'alcool, aurait préféré le sommeil artificiel, dans un hôtel de Turin, au cours de la nuit du 27 au 28 août 1950.

Dix jours plus tôt, il écrivait : « Il suffit d'un peu de courage. (…) Quand j'y pensais, cela semblait facile. Et pourtant, de pauvres petites femmes l'ont fait. Il faut de l'humilité, non de l'orgueil. Tout cela me dégoûte. Pas de paroles. Un geste. Je n'écrirai plus. » Telle est l'ultime entrée du journal qu'il a tenu entre 1935 et 1950 et qui, publié en 1952 sous le titre Le Métier de vivre, est sans doute son œuvre la plus célèbre, souvent lue comme une lente marche au suicide.
